Spitfire Marks & Drawing Numbers

Note that drawings relating to a specific Mark are the DIFFERENCES from the Mark I (300 series drawings).  You therefore need the Mk I drawings AND the specific Mk you are interested in to have all the drawings we hold for that Mark.

The following table indicates the drawing number series that applies to each mark of Supermarine Spitfire.

Technical Drawings - numbering system

A Supermarine Spitfire drawing number is made up of 5 digits.

First three digits - the Type or Mark No. (300=Spitfire I, 349=Spitfire V etc.)
Next two digits - are for the major assembly (See the major assembly listing below)
Sheet number - issued sequentially Letter - denotes the edition of the drawing

For example, drawing 34927 Sheet 43/B is a Spitfire V component fitted to fuselage frame 9. Where a later Mark (such as the Mk.V) used a part or structure from an earlier aircraft without any modifications, the drawing for that part was not redrawn.

So to assemble a set of drawings for a later mark you need to start with the Mark 1 and add any differences.

Regrettably, there are gaps in the archives and when putting together packages of drawings specific to an area of the structure we have sought to provide as much detail as possible which may mean that drawings in the package originate with different Marks.
